Family and Friends Pay Tribute to ‘Brilliant’ Mike and Hannah Lynch
The family of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah have expressed their “unspeakable grief” following the tragic sinking of their yacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday. The final body, believed to be that of 18-year-old Hannah, was recovered on Friday, bringing a somber close to the search.
In a heartfelt statement, the family shared their devastation and thanked the Italian coastguard, emergency services, and all who assisted in the rescue efforts. “Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” the statement read.
Mike Lynch, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, was remembered by close friend Andrew Kanter as “the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known.” Kanter spoke of Lynch’s passion for life, knowledge, and his inspiring presence, emphasizing how deeply he will be missed.
Hannah, who had just secured a place at the University of Oxford to study English, was also honored by those who knew her. Her sister, Esme, described her as “endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend.” She added, “She is my little angel, my star.”
Gracie Lea, a classmate of Hannah, remembered her as “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind,” recalling her ever-present smile. Hannah had recently completed her A-levels and was poised to embark on her academic journey at Oxford.
A spokesperson for her school, Latymer Upper in west London, expressed shock at the news, offering their condolences to the family and everyone involved in the tragedy.
Italian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the yacht’s sinking, which claimed the lives of Mike, Hannah, and five others on board. The loss of both father and daughter has sent ripples of sorrow through their community, leaving many to mourn the passing of two extraordinary individuals.
In a devastating incident in eastern India, at least 46 people, including 37 children and seven women, have drowned while celebrating the Hindu Jivitputrika festival. The fatalities, which occurred across 15 districts within the past 24 hours, resulted from victims ritually bathing in rivers and ponds swollen by recent flooding.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have conducted airstrikes in Beirut, reportedly killing Mohammad Hussein Surur, a senior Hezbollah air unit leader. The Lebanese health ministry confirmed two deaths and 15 injuries from the attack. The strikes come amid escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah, with both sides exchanging fire throughout the night and into the morning.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the IDF would continue to fight “with full force” against Hezbollah, aiming to dismantle the Iran-backed militant group. Amid the intensifying conflict, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin renewed calls for a diplomatic solution. The U.S., along with 11 other allied nations, has urged both Israel and Hezbollah to agree to a ceasefire to prevent further escalation and civilian casualties.
Ferry travel between the Isle of Man and Lancashire continues to face disruption due to strong winds over the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has cancelled Thursday’s 08:45 BST sailing of the Manxman to Heysham and its scheduled 14:15 return journey. This follows the cancellation of the vessel’s return trip from the Lancashire port on Wednesday evening.
The disruptions have affected postal services, with the Isle of Man Post Office reporting delays in deliveries from the UK. While local deliveries within the island remain unaffected, items posted on Wednesday for UK delivery may not reach Royal Mail’s network in time for Friday delivery.
Additionally, the ferry cancellations have caused a delay in newspaper deliveries, with no papers available on the island on Thursday, as confirmed by the island’s wholesale distributor.
