Family and Friends Pay Tribute to ‘Brilliant’ Mike and Hannah Lynch
The family of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah have expressed their “unspeakable grief” following the tragic sinking of their yacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday. The final body, believed to be that of 18-year-old Hannah, was recovered on Friday, bringing a somber close to the search.
In a heartfelt statement, the family shared their devastation and thanked the Italian coastguard, emergency services, and all who assisted in the rescue efforts. “Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” the statement read.
Mike Lynch, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, was remembered by close friend Andrew Kanter as “the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known.” Kanter spoke of Lynch’s passion for life, knowledge, and his inspiring presence, emphasizing how deeply he will be missed.
Hannah, who had just secured a place at the University of Oxford to study English, was also honored by those who knew her. Her sister, Esme, described her as “endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend.” She added, “She is my little angel, my star.”
Gracie Lea, a classmate of Hannah, remembered her as “sincere, dedicated, fiercely intelligent and genuinely kind,” recalling her ever-present smile. Hannah had recently completed her A-levels and was poised to embark on her academic journey at Oxford.
A spokesperson for her school, Latymer Upper in west London, expressed shock at the news, offering their condolences to the family and everyone involved in the tragedy.
Italian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the yacht’s sinking, which claimed the lives of Mike, Hannah, and five others on board. The loss of both father and daughter has sent ripples of sorrow through their community, leaving many to mourn the passing of two extraordinary individuals.
