Emma Raducanu Exits Wimbledon After Loss to Qualifier Lulu Sun
Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon journey came to an abrupt end as she was defeated by New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun in the fourth round. Despite battling through a back injury in the final set, the 21-year-old British wildcard succumbed to a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 loss in a gripping match on Centre Court.
Raducanu had managed to level the match and boost her confidence after an impressive performance from the spirited Sun. However, an unfortunate slip on the baseline during the first game of the third set exacerbated her condition. The 2021 US Open champion required on-court treatment for her hip and back but continued to play, much to the crowd’s encouragement.
Despite her determination, Raducanu struggled to regain her footing. She was broken twice in the decisive set, with Sun capitalizing on her opponent’s impaired movement. The world number 135 Raducanu missed her chance to advance to her first Wimbledon quarter-final, marking a significant moment for Sun, who had never previously won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam.
Disappointing End for Raducanu
Raducanu’s early exit leaves no British players in the singles draws at the All England Club. Her defeat followed an impressive start to the tournament, where she sailed through her initial matches without dropping a set. However, Sun’s powerful and confident gameplay ultimately disrupted Raducanu’s momentum and disappointed the hopeful home crowd.
Adding to the dismay, Raducanu’s withdrawal from a mixed doubles appearance with Andy Murray, due to wrist stiffness, drew some criticism. The move denied Murray another chance to play at Wimbledon in what could be his farewell tournament.
Sun’s Rising Star
For Lulu Sun, this victory marks a career milestone. Overwhelmed with emotion, the 23-year-old expressed her elation at reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals in only her second Grand Slam main-draw appearance. Having defeated Chinese eighth seed Zheng Qinwen in the first round, Sun’s remarkable run continues as she prepares to face Croatia’s Donna Vekic for a place in the semi-finals.
Sun’s resilience and tenacity on the court have made her a standout player in this year’s tournament, and her journey forward will be closely watched by tennis enthusiasts worldwide.

Sessegnon Strike Lifts Fulham’s European Hopes as Villa Stumble
Ryan Sessegnon delivered the decisive moment as Fulham F.C. strengthened their push for European qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa F.C. at Craven Cottage.
The result temporarily lifted Fulham into 10th place in the table, placing them firmly in contention for a European finish. They now sit just two points behind sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., keeping the race for continental football wide open as the season approaches its conclusion.
Sessegnon, who recently committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension this week, made the breakthrough late in the first half. After Emiliano Martínez reacted well to save a header from Saša Lukić, the rebound fell kindly for Sessegnon, who calmly swept the ball home to give Fulham the advantage.
The home side thought they had doubled their lead in the second half when Timothy Castagne headed into the net, but the effort was ruled out after a foul on Martínez was spotted during the build-up.
With Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands, Villa had opportunities to respond. Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers both missed chances, but Unai Emery’s side lacked sharpness throughout much of the contest.
The defeat comes at a critical stage for Villa, who are preparing for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final against Nottingham Forest F.C. on Thursday. A win over Fulham would have significantly strengthened their hopes of securing a top-five Premier League finish and automatic qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Instead, Villa now face added pressure in the final stretch of the domestic campaign, while Fulham continue to build momentum in their pursuit of an impressive European return.

Injured Lamine Yamal ‘expected to be fit’ for World Cup
Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of FC Barcelona’s season due to injury, but there is growing confidence that the young forward will be ready in time to represent Spain at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The 18-year-old attacker suffered a hamstring injury in his left leg during Wednesday’s narrow 1–0 victory over Celta Vigo. Yamal had put Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, showing composure under pressure before immediately signalling to the bench and going down, holding his left hamstring.
Medical staff assisted him off the pitch, and he went straight down the tunnel for further assessment. The following day, Barcelona confirmed that Yamal will undergo a conservative treatment plan. While this rules him out for the rest of the league campaign, the club remains optimistic about his recovery timeline, indicating he should return in time for international duty this summer.
Despite the setback, Yamal expressed determination and positivity in a message shared on Instagram. He acknowledged the emotional difficulty of being sidelined at such a crucial stage of the season but reaffirmed his belief in his teammates and their ability to continue delivering strong performances.
Barcelona, the reigning La Liga champions, currently sit at the top of the table with a nine-point lead over Real Madrid. The two sides are set to meet on 10 May in one of the six remaining fixtures, as Barcelona aim to maintain their commanding position.
On the international stage, Spain are preparing for their World Cup campaign in Group H. They will open against Cape Verde on 15 June, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia on 21 June and Uruguay on 27 June. With recovery progressing as expected, Yamal remains firmly in contention to play a key role in Spain’s tournament ambitions.

Manchester City Go Top as Burnley Relegated After Turf Moor Defeat
Manchester City surged to the top of the Premier League table with a crucial victory at Turf Moor, a result that also confirmed Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.
Manager Pep Guardiola has seen his side hit peak form at a decisive stage of the season, overturning a nine-point gap on Arsenal in less than two weeks. An 11-game unbeaten run has propelled City to the summit with just five matches remaining.
Top scorer Erling Haaland set the tone early, opening the scoring after just five minutes with a composed finish over goalkeeper Martin Dubravka following a precise assist from Jeremy Doku. Haaland later struck the post as City pushed for a second goal.
Despite their dominance, City were unable to fully capitalise on their chances. Rayan Cherki came close with a powerful effort that Dubravka tipped onto the crossbar, while Nico O’Reilly saw his header saved and Rayan Ait-Nouri fired over after a slick team move.
Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, created opportunities of their own. Jaidon Anthony tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a curling effort, while Zian Flemming missed from a promising position.
However, the defeat seals Burnley’s fate, confirming their return to the Championship for the second time in three years. The result also strengthens City’s title charge, with momentum firmly on their side as the season enters its final stretch.
