Four Arrested Over Alleged Racist Campaign Targeting Vinicius Jr
Spanish authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with an alleged online campaign aimed at racially abusing Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. The campaign reportedly encouraged fans to wear black face masks to conceal their identities while engaging in racist behavior towards the Brazilian forward.
Vinicius Jr, 24, has been vocal about the racial abuse he has endured throughout his career, even breaking down emotionally during a press conference earlier this year. He expressed his frustration, admitting that the constant discrimination has made him feel “less and less” inclined to continue playing football.
The four men were taken into custody on 14 and 15 October but were later released as investigations continue. While the Spanish national police have not disclosed their identities, they confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing and could lead to further arrests. The racist campaign, which went viral online, sparked significant concern across Spain, leading to these arrests.
The first action by the police took place on 29 September ahead of the La Liga derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. The campaign, circulated under the hashtag “Metropolitano with a mask” in English, stirred tensions, although no specific racist incidents occurred during the match itself. However, the game was briefly suspended when objects were thrown onto the pitch.
This isn’t the first time racist abuse has targeted Vinicius Jr. In June, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for their involvement in racist incidents during a match in May 2023. Following these ongoing issues, Vinicius has said that he and his teammates will walk off the pitch if faced with more racism this season, emphasizing that stopping matches may be the only solution to ending racism in football.

Liverpool Stage Thrilling Comeback to Beat Brighton and Go Top of the Premier League
Liverpool climbed to the top of the Premier League table after an electrifying comeback victory against Brighton at a roaring Anfield. The Reds capitalized on a day when both of their title rivals, Arsenal and Manchester City, suffered defeats.
Brighton had stunned the Anfield faithful by taking the lead in the first half. Ferdi Kadioglu’s impressive strike from 16 yards out found the back of the net via the inside of the post, capping off a dominant opening spell for the visitors. The Seagulls looked poised to move up to third place as they kept Liverpool at bay and even had a chance to double their lead, but Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial save to deny Georginio Rutter.
However, the second half belonged to Liverpool. The hosts found an equalizer when Cody Gakpo’s left-wing cross fortuitously sailed into the net, marking his third goal against Brighton in just four days after his double in the Carabao Cup. The momentum shifted, and three minutes later, Mohamed Salah produced a moment of magic, curling a sublime shot into the far corner from the right side of the box to give Liverpool the lead.
The comeback was even more remarkable given how well Brighton had played, keeping the home crowd subdued at times. Yet, the Reds showed resilience under new manager Arne Slot, who has now guided the team to 13 wins in 15 matches.
With the victory, Liverpool moved two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the standings, taking full advantage of City’s loss at Bournemouth and Arsenal’s defeat at Newcastle. The title race is heating up, and Anfield continues to buzz with optimism.

Bournemouth Stun Manchester City to End Unbeaten Run with Historic Victory
Bournemouth delivered a stunning 2-1 victory over Manchester City, ending the reigning Premier League champions’ remarkable 32-game unbeaten streak in the competition, which had stretched back to December 2023. The upset also marked City’s second defeat in just four days following their Carabao Cup exit to Tottenham.
The Cherries, brimming with confidence after positive results against Aston Villa and Arsenal, set an aggressive tone from the outset. Within the opening minutes, City’s goalkeeper Ederson was called into action, making a crucial double save to deny Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert. Bournemouth’s relentless high pressing paid dividends in the ninth minute when Milos Kerkez’s precision cut-back from the byline found Semenyo, who slotted the ball home to give the hosts an early lead.
City struggled to find rhythm throughout a frustrating first half, failing to register a single shot on target. Bournemouth, however, came out for the second half brimming with belief. Just moments into the period, Evanlison nearly doubled the lead, only for Ederson to thwart the chance with a quick intervention. Evanlison made no mistake minutes later, connecting with another Kerkez delivery and sliding his effort into the bottom corner.
Bournemouth came close to further humiliating City when Adam Smith, with the goal gaping, sent a rebound over the bar after Marcus Tavernier’s shot had struck the post. City’s attacking talisman Erling Haaland managed a volley on target in the 80th minute, but it lacked power, and Josko Gvardiol’s header two minutes later gave the visitors a glimmer of hope. Deep into stoppage time, Haaland almost rescued a point, but his initial shot was saved on the line, and his rebound agonizingly struck the post.
The defeat sees City drop to second place in the Premier League standings, overtaken by Liverpool after their comeback victory over Brighton. Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s spirited win propels them up to eighth, capping off a memorable day at the Vitality Stadium.

Alexander Isak’s Header Hands Newcastle Win as Arsenal Stumble at St James’ Park
Alexander Isak’s early header secured a 1-0 victory for Newcastle over Arsenal, as the Gunners struggled offensively at St James’ Park. The decisive moment came in the 12th minute when Isak capitalized on Arsenal’s failure to clear their lines, connecting with a perfectly delivered cross from Anthony Gordon.
Arsenal, who started the match brightly, found themselves out of rhythm once Newcastle took the lead. Lacking creativity and unable to break through the Magpies’ disciplined defense, Mikel Arteta’s side managed only one shot on target throughout the game. Despite second-half changes aimed at reviving their attack, the Gunners remained frustrated by Newcastle’s resilience.
This victory lifts Newcastle to eighth in the Premier League standings, while Arsenal, sitting in third, risk falling eight points behind league leaders Manchester City if Pep Guardiola’s team secures a win against Bournemouth later in the day.
