UK Suspends Iran Flights Amid New Sanctions Over Missile Supplies to Russia
In response to Iran’s alleged supply of ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine, the UK has suspended all flights from Iranian carrier Iran Air, joining the US, France, and Germany in imposing new sanctions on Tehran. The coordinated measures include travel bans and asset freezes on key Iranian figures accused of aiding Russia’s military efforts.
During a visit to London, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Iranian forces had trained Russian personnel in the use of short-range ballistic missiles, which could be deployed against Ukraine in the coming weeks. Blinken highlighted that these actions by Iran violated multiple UN Security Council resolutions, further isolating Tehran on the global stage.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed Blinken’s concerns, describing the situation as a “significant and dangerous escalation.” He emphasized the growing reliance of Russian President Vladimir Putin on support from Iran and North Korea as he continues his aggressive campaign in Ukraine.
Iran has repeatedly denied supplying such weapons to Russia, but the sanctions underscore the international community’s increasing alarm over Iran’s role in the conflict. The suspension of Iran Air flights to the UK and Europe marks a significant tightening of restrictions on Tehran, signaling strong disapproval from Western nations over its involvement in the Ukraine war.
