Three People Charged in Connection to Liam Payne’s Death in Buenos Aires
Three individuals have been charged by Argentinian authorities in relation to the death of Liam Payne, former One Direction singer, who passed away on 16 October after a fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires.
The National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office announced that one individual who had accompanied Payne faces charges of “the abandonment of a person followed by death.” Additionally, a hotel employee and another person have been charged with supplying drugs. Authorities have not disclosed the names of those charged.
Payne, 31, who rose to international fame with One Direction after competing on The X Factor, left behind a child. Following his death, reports emerged that hotel staff had contacted emergency services twice, citing concerns that a guest was “taking too many drugs and alcohol” and “trashing the entire room.” Upon investigation, police discovered substances and damaged furniture in Payne’s room.
Toxicology results indicated the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system. The autopsy concluded that his death resulted from “multiple trauma” and “internal and external haemorrhage” due to the fall. Medical evaluations suggested that Payne may have been in a state of semi- or total unconsciousness at the time of the incident, ruling out the possibility of a deliberate act.
Authorities have conducted nine raids across Buenos Aires as part of their ongoing investigation, seizing Payne’s broken laptop and other devices. Over 800 hours of security footage and numerous witness testimonies from hotel staff, friends, family, and medical professionals have been reviewed.
Payne’s body has since been released to his family and is set to be repatriated to the UK.
