Thierry Henry Steps Down as France Under-21s Manager After Olympic Success

Thierry Henry has resigned as manager of the France Under-21s after guiding the team to a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The 47-year-old former Arsenal and Barcelona striker took charge of the team in 2023, signing a two-year contract, but has opted to step down earlier than expected.

Under Henry’s leadership, France’s under-23 team reached the final of the Paris Games, where they narrowly lost to Spain 5-3 in extra time. Despite the disappointment of missing out on gold, Henry expressed immense pride in his team’s achievement.

“Winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games for my country will remain one of the greatest prides of my life,” Henry said in a statement. “I am incredibly grateful to the federation, the players, the staff, and the supporters who allowed me to live a magical experience.”

The France Football Federation expressed regret over Henry’s departure, acknowledging that he had met the goals set for him during his tenure. Henry won four of six matches with the Under-21s and eight of 11 with the Olympic team, which featured seasoned players like Alexandre Lacazette and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

France’s Olympic campaign was marked by victories over the USA, Guinea, and New Zealand in the group stage, followed by wins against Argentina and Egypt in the knockout rounds. Although the team fell short in the final against Spain, Henry’s efforts were widely praised.

Henry, who earned 123 caps and scored 51 goals for France during his playing career, leaves his managerial role with high regard for his contributions to French football.
