Thai king signs same-sex marriage bill into law

Thailand has officially made history as the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, after King Maha Vajiralongkorn signed the marriage equality bill into law. The legislation, which passed the Senate in June, was published in the Royal Gazette and will take effect on January 22, 2025.

The new law, hailed by activists as a monumental step forward, replaces traditional gender-specific terms with inclusive, gender-neutral language. Same-sex couples will now enjoy equal rights in marriage, including adoption and inheritance privileges.

Ann Chumaporn, co-founder of the Bangkok Pride movement, celebrated the victory, saying, “Today we’re not only getting to write our names in marriage certificates, but we are also writing a page in history.” She plans to organize a mass wedding for over 1,000 LGBTQ+ couples on January 22, when the law takes effect.

The move cements Thailand’s reputation as a regional leader in LGBTQ+ rights, offering a significant moment of recognition for love and equality. Many in the community expressed joy and relief, with longtime activist Siritata Ninlapruek remarking, “We’ve been fighting for our rights for over 10 years, and now it’s finally happening.”

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra also congratulated the nation, sharing on social media: “Congratulations on everyone’s love. #LoveWins.”
