Telegram says arrested CEO Durov has ‘nothing to hide’
Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, was detained by French authorities at an airport north of Paris on Saturday, according to officials. The arrest was made under a warrant related to allegations concerning the app’s moderation practices. Durov is accused of failing to prevent the use of Telegram for criminal activities, including drug trafficking, child sexual content, and fraud.
In response, Telegram issued a statement asserting that Durov has “nothing to hide” and emphasized that the app’s moderation practices are “within industry standards and constantly improving.” The company argued that it is “absurd” to hold a platform or its owner responsible for misuse by users.
Telegram also pointed out its compliance with European Union laws, including the Digital Services Act, and stressed the app’s global reach and importance as a communication tool for nearly a billion users.
Durov’s detention has been extended and could last up to 96 hours. The Russian Embassy in France has expressed concern, stating that they are seeking clarification on the reasons for Durov’s detention and have criticized French authorities for not cooperating with Russian officials in providing consular access. Telegram has called for a prompt resolution of the situation.
