Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting Wins First Olympic Bout Amid Controversy

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, whose participation in the Paris Olympics has been surrounded by controversy due to a reported failed gender test last year, emerged victorious in her first bout in the women’s boxing division. Her presence in the Games has drawn attention, much like Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, both of whom were banned by the International Boxing Association (IBA) but permitted to compete under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 28-year-old Lin received a mixed reception from the crowd, entering the arena to a combination of cheers and boos. Despite the controversy, she secured a win against Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova in the 57kg category. The fight concluded with Turdibekova visibly upset, leaving the ring in tears and declining to speak with the media.

Lin briefly paused for media but did not respond to questions regarding the bout or the surrounding controversy. Of the five judges, only one awarded a round to Turdibekova, highlighting Lin’s dominant performance in the ring.

While the pair shook hands briefly after the match, they did not repeat the gesture once the result was announced.
