Storm Boris Wreaks Havoc in Italy After Devastating Central Europe

Storm Boris, which has already caused destruction across central Europe, is now battering northern and central Italy, bringing severe flooding and disruption. In the north-eastern region of Emilia Romagna, over 1,000 residents have been evacuated, while towns in Marche are grappling with rising waters and extensive damage. Tragically, two people have been reported missing.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced €10 billion in EU aid to assist affected nations, following meetings with leaders from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria. This financial support aims to address the devastation left in the storm’s wake, which has already claimed at least 23 lives across Europe.

The city of Faenza has been hit particularly hard, with residents forced to evacuate overnight as river levels surged. Landslides and floods have disrupted roads and railways, while schools, parks, and universities have shut down as a precaution. The city of Bologna, while monitoring river levels, remains on alert, with red warnings issued for much of Emilia Romagna until Friday.
