Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Sweep Across the UK

Thunderstorms and heavy rain have been sweeping across parts of the UK, particularly affecting southern England and Wales, with the weather set to continue throughout the weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for these regions, with Cornwall being hit the hardest by the storms.

Cornwall, located in south-west England, has experienced large hailstorms and frequent lightning strikes. The Met Office reported approximately 30mm (1.2 inches) of rain in the area, leading to concerns over localised flooding and dangerous driving conditions. Meteorologist Becky Mitchell cautioned that there is “probably quite a lot of water on the road,” creating “tricky driving conditions.”

Thunderstorms have also been reported across Wales and parts of southern England, including London, Surrey, and Oxfordshire, with further storms expected. Higher temperatures are likely to trigger more widespread thunderstorms in the afternoon, with additional heavy showers, hail, and potential flooding in parts of Wales, the Midlands, and south-west England.

Rainfall totals could reach between 50-80mm (2-3.2 inches), with the yellow weather warning remaining in effect until midnight on Sunday. Residents are advised to remain cautious of potential travel disruptions and to stay informed on the developing weather situation.
