Ryanair CEO Advocates for Two-Drink Limit at Airports to Curb In-Flight Disorder
Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, has called for a two-drink limit for passengers at airports to help address the rising issue of disorderly behavior on flights. O’Leary believes that limiting alcohol consumption before boarding could reduce the frequency of violent outbursts, which he says are occurring weekly due to the combination of alcohol and other substances.
“We don’t want to begrudge people having a drink,” O’Leary told the Daily Telegraph, but emphasized that the risks of excessive drinking before flying are significant, comparing it to the dangers of drink-driving. He noted that the behavior of intoxicated passengers, often exacerbated by delays and extended drinking times at airports, has increasingly targeted both crew members and fellow passengers.
O’Leary also highlighted the challenge airlines face in identifying inebriated individuals at boarding gates, especially when they are part of a group. “As long as they can stand up and shuffle, they will get through. Then when the plane takes off, we see the misbehavior,” he said.
