Tinubu vows increased support for Nigeria Police, emphasizes cybersecurity

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to bolstering the Nigeria Police Force’s capabilities with enhanced weaponry, training, and personnel. He made this pledge during the inauguration of the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and the Nigeria Police Force Resource Centre in Abuja.

Represented by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Tinubu highlighted the critical role of these initiatives in strengthening national security and reforming the Nigeria Police Force. He underscored the escalating threats posed by cybercriminals and online fraudsters, exacerbated by technological advancements and global events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tinubu stressed the government’s proactive stance in reviewing national cybercrime strategies to counter these multifaceted threats effectively. He emphasized the importance of creating a secure cyberspace and digital economy to attract foreign investments and ensure social security for Nigerians.

The President urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, to maximize the capabilities of the NPF-NCCC in safeguarding Nigeria’s cyberspace and advancing national development and economic prosperity. He also called for enhanced collaboration among security agencies to address complex security challenges effectively.

In his response, the I-G highlighted the NPF-NCCC’s pivotal role in transforming policing methods to combat cyber threats through technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships. He emphasized the centre’s mandate to employ forensic tools and expertise in detecting and investigating cybercrimes across all fronts.
