Netherlands Advance to Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals with Win Over Romania
Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice, and Cody Gakpo added his third goal of Euro 2024 to help the Netherlands overcome a spirited Romania and reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring midway through the first half with a brilliant finish, cutting inside and driving the ball into the bottom corner. Despite missing numerous chances afterwards, the Netherlands secured their lead late in the game when substitute Malen scored from Gakpo’s pass.
Malen then sealed the victory by charging towards the goal and slotting home after Romania had pushed players forward. The Netherlands displayed a much-improved performance, dealing with early pressure from an enthusiastic Romania, who were supported by their loud and colorful fans.
Romania’s initial pressing caused mistakes from the Netherlands, and they nearly took the lead when Dennis Man’s shot went just over the bar. However, Gakpo’s goal changed the game’s dynamics, and the Netherlands could have extended their lead just before halftime, but Xavi Simons missed a clear opportunity by firing wide.
Romania continued to fight in the second half, but the Netherlands created better chances. Memphis Depay failed to score from close range, Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, and Gakpo’s driving shot was pushed behind by the goalkeeper.
Malen, who came on at halftime, scored twice in the final 10 minutes to prevent any late drama. The Netherlands now look forward to facing either Turkey or a rematch with their group opponents Austria in the last eight.
