Nembe Women Protest Oil Spill, Call for Cleanup in Bayelsa

In Nembe, Bayelsa State, women from Nembe Local Government Area staged a protest on Friday against Aiteo Eastern and Production Company, the operator of Oil Mining Licence 29. The protest, marked by placards displayed at the company’s loading point, emphasized the urgent need for cleanup efforts following an oil spill on June 17, 2024. Among their demands were the provision of relief materials, fair compensation, and swift action to rectify the environmental damage.

Starting their demonstration at 6:30 am, the women issued a two-week ultimatum for Aiteo to address their concerns. They threatened to escalate their protest by occupying the company’s loading point at Nembe Creek if their demands were not met within the stipulated timeframe.
