MTV Postpones VMAs to Avoid Clash with US Presidential Debate

MTV has decided to delay its annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) by one day to avoid conflicting with the upcoming US presidential debate. The debate, set to take place on 10 September, will feature former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in a televised face-off. Initially, the VMAs were scheduled for the same date, but the network has since moved the ceremony to the following night.

The decision was made to prevent a potential drop in viewership for both events, with the presidential debate likely to draw significant attention, especially as it is the only one currently planned between the two candidates. Additionally, the clash could have posed a challenge to MTV’s image, given the network’s long-standing efforts to encourage political engagement and voter turnout among its audience, a campaign that began during the 1992 election.

This year’s VMAs will see Taylor Swift leading the nominations, with 10 nods, including categories like Artist, Video, and Song of the Year.
