Minister Urges Swift Action on Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Permanent Secretary
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has taken decisive action by formally lodging a complaint with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF) regarding serious allegations of sexual harassment against the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa.
In a letter dated May 27, 2024, and seen by our correspondent on Tuesday, Tuggar highlighted the gravity of the accusations made by Mrs. Simisola Ajayi and emphasized the need for an urgent and thorough investigation. The letter, titled “Re: Official Complaint Regarding Sexual Harassment Of Mrs. Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi By Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa (Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Foreign Affairs),” included an attachment of the formal complaint received via email.
Tuggar assured the HOCSF of his full cooperation, stating, “May I also assure you that I remain available to provide you with any assistance required in discharging your responsibilities.”
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Eche Abu-Ode, confirmed the authenticity of the complaint, stating, “Yes. The complaint is true.”
When contacted for his reaction, Ambassador Lamuwa declined to comment, citing his involvement in a meeting. As of the time of this report, he has not responded to messages seeking his response.
Mrs. Simisola Ajayi, through her lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), submitted a petition on May 29, 2024, calling for a comprehensive investigation into Ambassador Lamuwa’s alleged conduct. The petition, signed by Adebayo A. Oniyelu LP of Falana & Falana’s Chambers, details multiple instances of alleged harassment that have created an unsafe and uncomfortable working environment.
Ajayi recounted several incidents, including one during a policy retreat on October 7, 2023, where Lamuwa allegedly made inappropriate advances and suggested she join him in his hotel room. Another incident cited occurred on November 10, 2023, where Lamuwa allegedly invited her to travel to Hong Kong, promising significant personal benefits.
The Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alkasim Abdulkadir, stated, “No comment. The matter is being looked into by the relevant authorities.”
As the investigation progresses, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is committed to addressing these serious allegations, ensuring a safe and respectful working environment for all employees.
