McDonald's Extends $5 Value Meal to December, Aiming to Win Back Budget-Conscious Diners

McDonald’s has announced that its popular $5 value meal will be extended into December in most U.S. markets, in an effort to attract lower-income customers. The meal, which includes a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, small fries, four-piece chicken nuggets, and a small soft drink, has been well received since its launch in June.

Franchisees across the country have been voting on the extension, with around 80% of local markets opting to keep the deal available. More locations may join in as voting continues. McDonald’s also plans to offer additional local promotions and app-exclusive deals to further entice diners.

Joe Erlinger, President of McDonald’s U.S., emphasized the company’s commitment to affordability, stating that they are working with franchisees to “double down” on savings. This move comes after McDonald’s reported a dip in same-store sales in the second quarter, prompting the company to focus on value-driven offers to regain consumer interest.

The $5 value meal has become a cornerstone of McDonald’s strategy to compete with other fast-food chains, such as Burger King and Starbucks, which have also launched discounted promotions as consumers cut back on restaurant spending amid inflation.
