Manchester City Frustrated by Resilient Inter Milan in Champions League Opener

Manchester City began their Champions League campaign with a frustrating draw against a well-organized Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium. In a match echoing the 2023 final, Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to find their rhythm, not helped by an injury to Kevin De Bruyne, who was forced off at half-time.

Despite City’s usual attacking prowess, Inter Milan displayed superb defensive structure and posed a consistent threat on the counter. Erling Haaland, seeking his 100th goal for City, was effectively neutralized by the Italian defense.

The second half saw increased pressure from the hosts, with substitute Phil Foden having a shot saved by Inter keeper Yann Sommer, who also denied Josko Gvardiol. However, Inter wasted several good opportunities of their own. Former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian opted for a backheel attempt instead of a direct shot, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired over the bar from close range, much to the frustration of coach Simone Inzaghi.

City nearly snatched a late winner as Ilkay Gundogan’s header was saved by Sommer before going over the bar. The match ended with both sides sharing the points, leaving City looking for improvements as they progress in the tournament.
