Man City Defender Risa Shimizu to Miss Remainder of Olympics Due to Injury
Manchester City’s Japanese defender Risa Shimizu has been sidelined for the rest of the Olympics after sustaining a knee injury. The setback comes as a disappointment for the 28-year-old, who recently joined City after her contract with Women’s Super League (WSL) team West Ham expired.
Shimizu suffered the injury during Japan’s opening match at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a closely contested 2-1 defeat against Spain. Her absence will be felt by the Japanese team, but her focus will now be on recovery.
In a statement, Manchester City confirmed: “Risa will return to the City Football Academy for further assessment by the club’s medical team.” This move ensures that Shimizu receives the best possible care and rehabilitation, prioritizing her long-term health and return to the field.
Despite this setback, Shimizu’s new team, led by manager Gareth Taylor, is preparing for their upcoming WSL campaign, which kicks off against Arsenal on 22 September. The club is hopeful for Shimizu’s swift recovery, looking forward to her contribution in the league.
