Local Government Autonomy in Akwa Ibom State

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has welcomed the recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government areas, seeing it as a positive development that eases the burden on state governments. However, he expressed concerns about the effective implementation of this autonomy, particularly regarding the financial management capabilities of local governments.

Speaking to Government House correspondents upon his return from an official engagement, Governor Eno highlighted the challenges ahead, particularly ensuring prompt payment of salaries to local government workers and addressing existing backlogs.

“While I have not interfered with funds allocated to local governments since taking office, our focus now is on finding solutions to ensure local government workers and primary school teachers are paid promptly and arrears are cleared,” Governor Eno stated.

He emphasized the significance of the Supreme Court’s verdict, affirming its importance as the final word on local government autonomy. Governor Eno clarified that this autonomy does not undermine the state government’s efforts to support local governments, noting ongoing efforts to settle outstanding obligations like gratuities and pensions.

Under his administration’s “ARISE agenda,” which prioritizes rural development, significant funds have been directed towards addressing these financial commitments. Governor Eno reiterated his commitment to ensuring that local governments receive their due allocations transparently and effectively, in line with the principles of autonomy granted by the Supreme Court.

Overall, while acknowledging the challenges ahead, Governor Umo Eno views the autonomy of local governments as a beneficial step forward, providing relief and emphasizing the importance of careful planning and collaboration to ensure its successful implementation.
