Late Vertonghen Own Goal Sends France to Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals

A late own goal by Jan Vertonghen propelled France into the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, eliminating Belgium. The match, mostly devoid of quality and excitement, appeared to be heading for extra time until a shot by substitute Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen with five minutes remaining, securing France’s victory at Dusseldorf Arena.

France squandered several chances throughout the game, with captain Kylian Mbappe notably missing opportunities he usually converts. Belgium nearly took the lead when Kevin de Bruyne of Manchester City charged through the middle, but his shot was saved by Mike Maignan.

That was Belgium’s only notable chance as France held on in the final minutes to advance, where they will face either Portugal or Slovenia. Despite dominating possession, France had only one shot on target in the first half, a comfortable save from Antoine Griezmann’s long-range effort.

Mbappe, one of the world’s top forwards, struggled with his shooting, particularly when he curled over after creating space in the second half. France finished the match with 19 shots, only two of which were on target, and are still seeking their first goal from open play in the tournament.

Like several other top teams in Euro 2024, France is struggling to reach its full potential but will celebrate moving a step closer to the final.
