La Liga Matches to Be Postponed After Devastating Floods in Valencia Region

La Liga has announced that all football matches scheduled in Spain’s Valencia region, including Real Madrid’s game against Valencia on Saturday, are expected to be postponed due to the severe flash floods that have claimed at least 95 lives. Torrential rains have overwhelmed areas, with Chiva, near Valencia, experiencing over a year’s worth of rainfall in just eight hours.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) received requests from La Liga and various clubs to delay all games in the region across the top two divisions. This includes high-profile matches like Villarreal’s face-off against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, along with several Segunda Division games, such as Castellón v RC Ferrol, CD Eldense v SD Huesca, and Málaga’s visit to Levante.

The RFEF’s competition committee is expected to finalize the decision on Thursday, and the federation has also recommended postponing non-professional matches throughout the flood-hit region. A moment of silence will be observed at all games going forward over the next two weekends to honor the victims.

Several Copa del Rey games, including Valencia’s match against Parla Escuela and Levante’s game against Pontevedra, were postponed, with Valencia’s fixture rescheduled for November 6 in Parla, just outside Madrid. Matches involving Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Xerez, and other lower-division teams were similarly affected, with new dates set to be determined.

Barcelona and Real Madrid, among other top clubs, extended condolences to those affected, with Barcelona issuing a statement expressing “sympathy to the relatives of the victims and solidarity with the counties in Valencia and parts of Albacete and Andalusia affected by the torrential rain.”
