La Liga and Real Madrid Condemn Racist Abuse Aimed at Lamine Yamal After El Clasico
La Liga and Real Madrid have issued strong condemnations following the racist abuse directed at Barcelona’s young forward, Lamine Yamal, during Saturday’s El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu. Social media footage appears to show a section of home fans taunting the 17-year-old Spaniard after he celebrated his 77th-minute goal by pointing to his name on his shirt.
The match ended in a 4-0 victory for Barcelona, with goals from Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, moving the Catalan side six points clear of their rivals at the top of La Liga. However, the victory was marred by the racist abuse Yamal received.
La Liga quickly responded, releasing a statement condemning the incidents and announcing that it would report the racist insults and gestures to the National Police’s Hate Crimes Section. The league also plans to inform the Co-ordinating Prosecutor of the Hate Crimes and Discrimination unit of the State Attorney General’s office, reaffirming its commitment to eradicating racism from football.
Real Madrid echoed these sentiments, expressing deep regret over the behavior of a few fans. The club has launched an internal investigation to identify the individuals responsible, vowing to take both disciplinary and legal action against those involved.
Spain’s Minister for Migration and Inclusion, Elma Saiz, also weighed in, declaring that such acts of aggression must not be normalized in sports or any other spaces.
