Jigawa Enforces 24-Hour Curfew Following Violent Protests
In a decisive move, the Jigawa State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in response to the violent protests and looting that accompanied the #EndBadGovernance protests. Governor Namadi made this announcement in a state broadcast on Thursday night, emphasizing that the curfew would be enforced immediately.
However, the curfew will be temporarily relaxed on Friday from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. to allow Muslims to attend Jumm’at congregational prayers, showing consideration for religious practices amid the restrictions.
Governor Namadi expressed his concerns about the nature of the protests, stating, “Today we woke up with a series of protests that is not part of our culture and tradition. We feel that this protest will not be the solution to what people are demanding.”
He further emphasized that, “It is only Allah that can rescue you from that hardship. Therefore protest is not a solution and will not be a solution.” The governor condemned the involvement of youths in acts of vandalism and theft, adding, “We realized how people use young boys to vandalize and steal people’s property. This is not part of our culture and tradition.”
