Jannik Sinner Cruises into US Open Third Round

World number one Jannik Sinner continued his impressive form at the US Open, comfortably defeating American Alex Michelsen in straight sets to advance to the third round. The 23-year-old Italian secured his 50th victory of the year with a dominant 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 performance, demonstrating his top-tier skills on the New York courts.

Sinner, who is also the reigning Australian Open champion, entered the tournament with added confidence after being cleared of any wrongdoing following two positive tests for a banned substance earlier this year. His sharp play against Michelsen was a marked improvement from his first-round match against Mackenzie McDonald, where he had to rally from a set down to win.

In Thursday’s match, Sinner overcame a competitive first set with multiple breaks of serve before taking complete control, closing out the match in just one hour and 39 minutes. Reflecting on the victory, Sinner noted, “I’m very happy. He’s a very tough opponent. We played each other in Cincinnati a week ago. I knew what to expect, he knew what to expect a little.”

In other matches, seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz was unexpectedly knocked out by Australian Jordan Thompson in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 7-5. Additionally, American 16th seed Seb Korda was eliminated by Czech player Tomas Machac, who won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Machac will face either Belgium’s David Goffin or France’s Adrian Mannarino in the next round.
