INEC Clarifies Tenure of FCT Area Council Chairmen and Councillors

Abuja, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has clarified that the tenure of elected chairmen and councillors in the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will end in June 2026. This clarification was made during a meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Abuja on Friday.

Yakubu explained that the Electoral Act 2022, effective from February 25, 2022, extends the tenure to four years, aligning it with national executive and legislative elections. The current officials, who took their oaths of office on June 14, 2022, will see their tenure expire in June 2026.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to legal provisions and judicial pronouncements regarding tenure, assuring the public of INEC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of FCT elections.
