Imran Khan Supporters Push Into Islamabad’s Heart Despite Barricades
Thousands of supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have breached barriers and reached the heavily secured D Chowk in central Islamabad. The square, located near key government institutions including the parliament, supreme court, and prime minister’s office, is now the focal point of the protest demanding Khan’s release from prison.
Demonstrators, some in convoys and others on foot, continue to flood the area, many vowing to remain until their demands are met. According to a spokesperson for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the primary demand is the immediate release of Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year.
Imran Khan, a celebrated cricket hero turned politician, remains a deeply influential figure in Pakistan despite his incarceration. His supporters allege that the charges against him—ranging from corruption to inciting violence—are politically motivated, a claim Khan has consistently maintained.
Authorities have turned Islamabad into a fortress, with shipping containers barricading roads and heavy police and paramilitary presence deployed to prevent mass gatherings. Despite these efforts, protesters have managed to navigate the obstacles, creating a tense standoff in the capital.
The PTI spokesperson indicated that the sit-in outside parliament will persist until tangible progress is made. The protests reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration and underline the enduring political influence of Khan, even from behind bars.
