Hamas confirms death of Yahya Sinwar as Biden seeks 'path to peace'

Hamas has confirmed the death of its top leader, Yahya Sinwar, in a video statement by senior official Khalil al-Hayya. Sinwar, who led the militant group in Gaza, was reportedly killed during combat operations in Rafah on Thursday.

In the statement, al-Hayya emphasized that Sinwar’s death would not deter Hamas from continuing its mission, stating that his killing would strengthen the group’s resolve. Al-Hayya also declared that Israeli hostages would not be released until Israel withdraws from Gaza and halts its military actions.

Internationally, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer reiterated his support for Israel’s right to defend itself but emphasized that diplomacy is the only solution. He called for a ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate release of hostages, and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid. Starmer also warned that the world would not tolerate further delays in delivering humanitarian assistance, urging Israel to cooperate with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the region.
