Germany's Manuel Neuer Retires from International Football

Germany’s legendary goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a remarkable career that spanned over a decade. The 38-year-old, who was capped 124 times, played his final game for Germany last month in the Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat against Spain.

Neuer, a 2014 World Cup winner, made his international debut in 2009 and participated in eight major tournaments. He was instrumental in Germany’s World Cup triumph in Brazil, starting in the final against Argentina. In 2016, Neuer was named the captain of the national team, a position he held until Ilkay Gundogan took over earlier this year.

The announcement of his retirement follows closely on the heels of similar decisions by Gundogan and midfielder Toni Kroos, both of whom have also ended their international careers after Germany’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Despite stepping down from international duties, Neuer will continue his club career with Bayern Munich, where he recently signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club until 2025.
