Elon Musk Relocates SpaceX and X Headquarters to Texas Over California Law
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and owner of X, announced on Tuesday that he will relocate the headquarters of both companies from California to Texas. This decision follows the enactment of a new California law by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits school districts from notifying parents about a child’s gender identity change without the child’s consent.
Musk expressed his frustration on X, stating, “This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas.” He later confirmed that X’s headquarters would also be moving from San Francisco to Austin.
Musk mentioned that he had warned Governor Newsom about the potential consequences of such legislation a year ago, highlighting that such laws could drive families and businesses away from California to safeguard their interests.
The decision comes in the wake of personal experiences Musk has had with transgender issues. In 2022, his then 18-year-old daughter legally changed her name and gender to Vivian Jenna Wilson, adopting her mother Justine Wilson’s maiden name and distancing herself from the Musk family name. Musk, when asked about his estranged transgender daughter, remarked, “Can’t win them all,” but asserted that he maintained good relationships with his other children.
