Dutch Triumph Over Germany in Penalty Shootout to Win Olympic Hockey Gold
The Netherlands secured their first men’s hockey Olympic gold medal in 24 years, defeating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Paris 2024 final. After a tense 1-1 draw in regulation time, Dutch goalkeeper Pirmin Blaak emerged as the hero by saving three attempts in the 3-1 shootout victory.
This win marks the Netherlands’ third Olympic men’s hockey title, with their last triumph dating back to Sydney 2000, where they also won in a penalty shootout against South Korea.
In a high-quality final featuring the world’s two top teams, the Netherlands took the lead with a goal from Thierry Brinkman, who capitalized on Koen Bijen’s clever lob over German goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg.
The Dutch had a chance to secure victory 11 minutes before the end, but Gonzalo Peillat of Germany made a crucial goal-line clearance from Bijen’s close-range shot.
Germany quickly responded, equalizing through Thies Prinz, who skillfully salvaged a short corner and drove the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
With the match ending in a stalemate, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where the Netherlands emerged victorious, celebrating their long-awaited return to Olympic glory.
