Djokovic Claims Olympic Gold, Achieves Career ‘Golden Slam’
In a thrilling showdown, Novak Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz to secure a long-awaited Olympic gold medal and complete the career ‘Golden Slam.’ Djokovic, 37, has now added the Olympic title to his collection, having won a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles. This victory marks his first Olympic gold after five attempts.
The match, played in front of a packed crowd in Paris, saw Djokovic deliver one of his best performances of the year. He triumphed over French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in just under three hours. Djokovic sealed the win with a forehand winner, expressing disbelief and joy by throwing his racquet to the ground and stretching his arms toward his team.
Overcome with emotion, Djokovic embraced Spain’s Alcaraz before breaking down in tears and falling to his knees on the court. He celebrated by unfurling a Serbian flag and climbing into the stands to join his family and support team.
Djokovic is now the fifth player in history to achieve the ‘Golden Slam’ in singles—winning all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold—joining the ranks of Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, and Steffi Graf.
“It was an incredible fight, and I had to play my best tennis,” an emotional Djokovic told Eurosport. “I put my heart, my soul, everything to win gold. I did it for my country first—for Serbia.”
Alcaraz, 21, who made his Olympic debut, also shed tears after the match but left with a silver medal, showcasing a promising future in his career.
Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti secured the bronze medal, having defeated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday.
