Democrats Urge Biden to Consider Election Candidacy Amidst Health Concerns

President Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure from top Democrats to reconsider his candidacy as his campaign activities are currently on hold due to a Covid-19 infection.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries reportedly met privately with Biden, expressing concerns over his age and its potential impact on the upcoming election. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also reportedly voiced skepticism about Biden’s ability to defeat Donald Trump in November.

Biden, aged 81, announced his Covid-19 infection on Wednesday night, with the White House confirming he is experiencing mild symptoms. Despite being vaccinated and boosted, this marks his third positive Covid test.

The President had been actively campaigning in Las Vegas earlier in the day, where he interacted with supporters at a local restaurant before canceling a later speech. His spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, assured that Biden will continue his duties while isolating at his Delaware home.

Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician, noted the President’s symptoms include a runny nose and cough, adding that he has begun treatment with Paxlovid and remains in good spirits.

The sudden interruption comes at a critical juncture for Biden, who has been focusing on revitalizing support among Hispanic voters. His illness has sparked renewed discussions among Democrats about the viability of his candidacy, with some expressing concern that his presence on the ticket could affect Congressional races as well.
