Civil Servants Hopeful for Timely Payment of Salary Increase

Some civil servants have expressed optimism regarding the timely payment of approved salary adjustments for those on the consolidated salary structure, as well as the resolution of prolonged minimum wage negotiations.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, Dr. Uche Anune commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a salary increase of between 25 percent and 35 percent for civil servants on the six consolidated salary structures. He encouraged the government to expedite the implementation to help workers mitigate the current economic challenges.

“It is encouraging that the president recognizes the need to provide some relief by adjusting and harmonizing salaries for public sector workers at the federal level.

“However, I hope the president can expedite this process because many Federal Government workers are currently facing difficulties due to certain policy adjustments.

“I understand that negotiating and agreeing on sensitive issues like the minimum wage is challenging, and both the Federal Government and labor unions have valid points.’’

He emphasized that the president could consider the implications of salary adjustments, their sustainability, and the ability of state governments to pay.

“It is positive that they are adopting an inclusive approach to the negotiation process.

“But the salary adjustment for workers is long overdue; I urge the president to take swift action to resolve the minimum wage issue as quickly as possible.”
