Celtic Captain Callum McGregor Retires from International Football
Celtic’s captain, Callum McGregor, has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 31. The midfielder, who earned 63 caps for Scotland, was a key member of Steve Clarke’s squad during Euro 2024.
McGregor shared that he recently discussed his decision with Clarke, who expressed disappointment but understood the rationale behind it. McGregor described the decision as “very difficult” but believes it is “the right one at the right time.”
Reflecting on his international career, McGregor stated, “It has been a huge honour to achieve 63 caps for my country, as appearing just once would have been a dream come true.
“Callum’s consistency of performance and leadership qualities have been a real catalyst in the team’s return to major tournaments,” Clarke told the Scottish FA website. “He has been a driving force in the middle of the park and, in many ways, is a coach’s dream: he is low maintenance, leads by example and sets the highest standards every day in training and in matches.”
Clarke emphasized McGregor’s professionalism and dedication, which greatly influenced the squad. While Clarke expressed disappointment over losing McGregor’s qualities, he respected the player’s decision to step back from international duties.
“He will be missed by his team-mates, the coaches, the backroom staff, and, of course, the fans. I would like to thank him for all that he has contributed and helped us achieve,” Clarke added.
