Bruno Fernandes Commits Future to Manchester United with New Contract
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract, extending his tenure at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. The Portugal midfielder, who has become a pivotal figure for the Red Devils, has scored 79 goals and provided 67 assists in 234 appearances since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million.
Fernandes, 29, expressed his deep connection to the club, stating, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be, and I am relishing leading this team forward.” He emphasized the responsibility of wearing the United shirt and his dedication to the club’s success.
Having taken over the captaincy from Harry Maguire in July 2023, Fernandes has continued to play a crucial role under manager Erik ten Hag, despite facing criticism from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane. Fernandes remains optimistic about the future, saying he “wouldn’t have signed this contract” if he didn’t believe his “best moments in a United shirt are still to come.”
Reflecting on his journey with United so far, Fernandes highlighted some of his most memorable moments, including hearing his name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights, and lifting trophies at Wembley. He also shared that discussions with the club’s leadership and manager have reinforced his belief in United’s determination to fight for major trophies in the coming years.
