Brentford Secure Signing of Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg for £25 Million
Brentford have successfully signed Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool in a deal valued at up to £25 million. The 22-year-old joins the Bees on a five-year contract, choosing Brentford over other interested clubs, including Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
The deal sees Brentford paying an initial £20 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. Liverpool also retains a 17.5% sell-on clause as part of the transfer agreement.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed his excitement about the signing, describing Van den Berg as a “great signing” for the club. Frank praised the young defender’s qualities, highlighting his speed, game-reading ability, and composure on the ball.
“Sepp fits our culture and the way we want to play,” said Frank. “He is quick, reads the game well, and is composed on the ball in both build-up play and decisive defensive actions. Sepp is a great character, and I am convinced that he will fit in well with the group and help us to push forward.”
Van den Berg spent last season on loan at German club Mainz, where he made 33 Bundesliga appearances. He initially joined Liverpool from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in 2019 but managed only four senior appearances for the Reds, also spending 18 months on loan at Preston North End.
