Aston Villa Complete Major Signing of Everton's Onana for £50m

Aston Villa have successfully signed midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a deal worth £50 million. The 22-year-old, who played every minute of Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign, now has the chance to shine in the Champions League with Villa in the upcoming season.

Onana joined Everton from Lille in 2022 for £33 million and made 72 appearances for the Toffees, scoring four goals. He was previously linked with a move to Arsenal in 2023 and attracted interest from several top clubs this summer.

Villa manager Unai Emery had been searching for a new defensive midfielder following the sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35 million in June. With Villa finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, they are gearing up for the challenge of Champions League competition, a stage they haven’t graced since the 1982-83 season, following their European Cup victory.

The addition of Onana brings Villa’s summer spending to approximately £140 million. The club has also invested £35 million in Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, £18.6 million for Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus, £18 million for Jaden Philogene’s return from Hull, £5 million for Ross Barkley’s move from Luton, and £9 million for Lewis Dobbin’s transfer from Everton.

Aston Villa will kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham on Saturday, August 17, with a strengthened squad ready to make an impact both domestically and in Europe.
