Arsenal Secure Italy Defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna
Arsenal have completed the signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for a fee that could rise to £42 million, including add-ons. The 22-year-old, who was a key player for Italy in all three of their group matches at Euro 2024, has committed to a five-year contract with the Gunners.
Calafiori has joined his new teammates in Philadelphia as they prepare for the upcoming season. “I’m really happy to be here,” said Calafiori. “I waited a lot. I hope we are going to do something great this season.”
Known for his versatility, Calafiori can play as a central defender or at left-back, and he has also previously featured as a left winger. Last season, he made 30 appearances for Bologna in Serie A, scoring two goals and providing five assists, contributing to Bologna’s impressive fifth-place finish, which secured them a Champions League spot.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing, describing Calafiori as a “great signing.” Arteta praised the young defender’s character and skills, which he believes will strengthen Arsenal’s squad as they aim for major trophies. “Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies,” Arteta stated. “He has already shown great development in recent seasons with his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progression and development in the past year being really impressive.”
