Argentina vs. Morocco Olympic Match Resumes After Delay
The opening football match of the Olympics between Argentina and Morocco experienced an unexpected delay due to crowd disturbances but ultimately resumed, ensuring the continuation of the tournament’s thrilling start.
Initially, Morocco held a 2-0 lead against Argentina. However, the match took a dramatic turn when Cristian Medina appeared to score a header in the 16th minute of the added injury time, which had been scheduled for only 15 minutes. This goal would have brought Argentina level with Morocco.
The celebrations by the Argentina team were briefly marred by objects, including cups and bottles, being thrown onto the field. The situation escalated when a flare landed near the players and coaching staff, prompting a few fans in Morocco colors to enter the pitch.
The referee acted swiftly, leading the players off the field for safety reasons. A stadium announcement informed spectators, “Your session has been suspended; please make your way to the nearest exit.”
Despite the initial confusion, it was later confirmed that the match would conclude without fans present, ensuring the safety of all participants. However, before play resumed, a video assistant referee (VAR) review determined that Argentina’s potential equalizing goal was offside, nullifying the dramatic header by Medina.
