Analysis: Biden's Debate Performance Raises Concerns Over His Age

President Joe Biden entered the debate with expectations set low, but his performance has heightened concerns about his age and cognitive abilities. Throughout the 90-minute debate, Biden often appeared flat, rambling, and unclear, struggling to maintain coherence in his responses.

Midway through the debate, the Biden campaign informed reporters that the president was battling a cold, which was cited as a reason for his raspy voice. While this may have been true, it also came across as an excuse for his overall lackluster performance.

Biden spent much of the debate on the defensive. Early in the evening, several of his answers seemed nonsensical, such as when he concluded an answer with, “We finally beat Medicare,” a perplexing remark about the government-run healthcare program for the elderly.

Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s former communications director, was candid in her assessment on CNN immediately after the debate, stating, “There’s no two ways about it, that was not a good debate for Joe Biden.” She pointed out that Biden’s primary challenge was to demonstrate his energy and stamina, a challenge he failed to meet.

As the debate wore on, Biden, like a boxer against the ropes, began to take big swings at his opponent in an attempt to shift the momentum. While some of these attacks landed and provoked angry responses from his opponent, they were not enough to overshadow the concerns raised by his earlier performance.
