Alphabet Soup of 'Electrified' Vehicles Awaits New Car Buyers as EV Sales Stall

Car shopping presents a new challenge: a wide range of “electrified” vehicle options. As the adoption of all-electric vehicles progresses slowly in the U.S., automakers are introducing various hybrid models alongside traditional gas-powered cars. This increase in options offers more choices for consumers, but also adds complexity for both buyers and automakers, especially as many return to the market after supply chain disruptions and high used car prices.

“More choice in the marketplace is good for consumers, but only if they understand the differences,” said Paul Waatti, director of industry analysis at AutoPacific. There’s a need for clarity on vehicle types and their benefits and drawbacks.

While all except EVs and fuel-cell vehicles still use internal combustion engines, they incorporate technologies like batteries or motors to enhance performance or fuel economy. Kia, for instance, has created online resources to address common questions about EVs and hybrids, from technical aspects to practical concerns like car wash compatibility.

Auto executives emphasize the importance of educating both dealers and consumers about these vehicles. “Each customer, in the end, is very different,” noted Jérémie Papin, chair of Nissan Americas. It’s about what the vehicle can offer the customer, rather than just the technology itself.
