Alex Morgan Bids Farewell to Football in Emotional Final Game
United States soccer star Alex Morgan played her final professional game on Sunday, marking the end of a storied 15-year career that saw her become a two-time World Cup champion and an Olympic gold medalist. The 35-year-old striker announced her retirement last week after revealing she is expecting her second child.
Morgan, who captained the San Diego Wave, faced North Carolina Courage in a 4-1 home defeat. The match was a bittersweet farewell for Morgan, who missed a penalty in the 10th minute before being substituted just three minutes later. She left the field to a standing ovation from the 26,516 fans in attendance, visibly moved by the emotional send-off.
After the game, Morgan addressed the crowd, reflecting on her career and the journey she has taken. “What a ride it’s been,” she said, expressing gratitude to her teammates and fans. “There have been so many incredible moments in my career, but this last moment I share on the field with you, I will cherish forever. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
Morgan’s illustrious career includes being a key part of the U.S. Women’s National Team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2015 and 2019, as well as securing a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She is also a mother to her daughter Charlie, born in 2020, and now looks forward to expanding her family as she steps away from the game she helped elevate on the world stage.
