US Celebrates 250th Independence Anniversary as Extreme Heat Alters Fourth of July Festivities

The United States is marking the 250th anniversary of its independence under an intense heatwave that has disrupted celebrations across much of the eastern part of the country, with millions of Americans enduring dangerous temperatures.

Conditions have been especially severe in Washington, DC, where temperatures climbed above 100°F (38°C) by mid-afternoon. In Baltimore, the mercury reached 104°F (40°C), while New York City recorded temperatures of around 92°F (33°C) in Central Park.

Although New York’s air temperature was lower than in other cities, high humidity pushed the heat index—the “feels like” temperature—to nearly 100°F (38°C), making conditions particularly uncomfortable.

Meteorologists say the combination of extreme heat and humidity significantly increases health risks because humid air slows the evaporation of sweat, reducing the body’s ability to cool itself naturally.

The National Weather Service has advised people in affected areas to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, limit exposure to direct sunlight, remain well hydrated and seek cool indoor environments whenever possible—guidance that has proven challenging for many participating in traditional Independence Day celebrations.

Despite the oppressive conditions, Donald Trump said attendance at the capital’s anniversary events remained strong.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said: “Despite the heat, which isn’t as bad as predicted, the crowds in DC are incredible. The love of our country has never been stronger.”

He also praised the military aerial flyovers, describing them as being “at a level never seen before,” and commented on the appearance of the Reflecting Pool, saying it “looks great” despite what he described as damage caused by “vandal thugs.”

Temperatures in Washington remained around 101°F (38°C) as celebrations continued.

Before the festivities began, several US media outlets reported that White House officials and event organisers were concerned that the extreme heat might discourage large numbers of people from attending the anniversary celebrations.

Trump has frequently commented on crowd sizes at public events throughout his political career, including during his first presidential inauguration in 2017, when attendance figures became the subject of widespread public and media debate.

Despite weather-related disruptions and public health warnings, Independence Day events—including parades, concerts, military displays and fireworks—have continued across the country, with authorities urging attendees to take precautions against heat-related illness while commemorating the nation’s 250th year of independence.
