Newcastle appoint Matthias Jaissle as head coach

Newcastle United F.C. have appointed Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach following the departure of Eddie Howe.

The 38-year-old joins Newcastle after successful spells with Al-Ahli Saudi FC and FC Red Bull Salzburg, although this will be his first managerial role in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Jaissle becomes the Premier League’s second-youngest current head coach and is set to take charge of his first competitive match when Newcastle face Liverpool F.C. on 23 August.

The German arrived at Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in Spain over the weekend before his appointment was officially confirmed on Wednesday.

A source close to the club said Jaissle was determined to understand Newcastle’s identity and its connection with supporters as quickly as possible.

“He will try to understand the culture, what Newcastle means to the community, as soon as possible,” the source said. “That’s what he will live by.”

Jaissle inherits a squad already familiar with an aggressive, high-intensity style of play developed under former manager Eddie Howe, while several new young signings are expected to adapt quickly to his coaching methods.

He has also brought a team of coaches and analysts to help implement his philosophy.

Former Al-Ahli defender Merih Demiral praised Jaissle’s attention to detail and man-management.

“Looking forward to going to training every day was so important,” Demiral said. “They paid great attention to every detail and always made sure we were fully prepared.

“Matthias has built a really strong team around him and they played a huge role in our success.”

Jaissle will oversee one of the Premier League’s youngest squads following Newcastle’s summer recruitment, while experienced players including Dan Burn and Fabian Schär are expected to provide leadership in the dressing room.
